Door frames and architraves: what they do, their sizes, and choosing a colour

Frames & architravesBy the CONTI team
Short answer

A door frame is the structure fixed into the wall that the door hangs from. An architrave is the trim that hides the joint between frame and wall. The CONTI frame measures 50 × 140 × 907 × 2147 mm and the architrave 18 × 60 × 967 × 2177 mm; both are solid, painted, and available in black or white.

The frame: where the door hangs

The frame is fixed into the wall opening. The hinges are mounted on it, so the frame carries the weight of the door every time it opens and closes. That is why it must be fitted straight and secure.

The CONTI frame is solid with a painted finish. Its profile is 50 × 140 mm, with outer dimensions of 907 × 2147 mm, made for the 820 × 2100 mm door leaf.

The architrave: the finishing trim

There is almost always a gap or uneven joint between the frame and the wall. The architrave is a slim trim fixed around the frame to cover that joint, so the door looks clean from both sides.

The CONTI architrave is also solid and painted, with an 18 × 60 mm profile and outer dimensions of 967 × 2177 mm.

Choosing a colour: black or white

The colour of the frame and architrave changes how the door reads in the room. Some combinations to start from:

  • White frame with a light door, such as Toledo OPF or Seville OLI, feels open and blends into white walls.
  • Black frame with a black door, such as Roma Monti Black or Madrid Sydney Black, gives a strong, graphic look.
  • Black frame with a wood door, such as the Roma Series, frames the grain and makes it stand out.

Use the same frame colour throughout the house so every room feels consistent, then vary the door design.

Buy a matching set

Because CONTI frames and architraves are sized to the door leaf, buying all three as a set reduces the risk of mismatched sizes on site. Ask our team about complete sets before you schedule installation.
